Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley
Around 8:00 AM, a driver/guide from Morocco Top Travel will come to your Riad/Hotel in Marrakech to accompany you to the departure pick-up location. Our 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes will then begin, heading towards Dades Valley. We will start by exploring the “Atlas Mountains” and crossing the “Tizi Ntichka” Pass, which is 2260 meters high. Along the way, we will make short stops to capture the breathtaking panoramic views of the High Atlas Mountains and experience the authentic Berber villages.
Next, we will continue our Sahara desert trip and reach the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a place recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We will have the chance to admire the cultural richness and beautiful landscapes of this Kasbah. It is famous for being featured in many well-known films such as “Gladiator,” “Obelix,” “The Mummy,” “The Jewel of the Nile,” and “Sahara” with Penélope Cruz. You will also have some free time for lunch in town (optional).
Our 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert trip will then take us to Ouarzazate, known as “The gate of the Sahara & Hollywood of Africa.” Afterward, we will continue through the captivating Skoura oasis palm groves, known as the Roses Valley. Here, you can witness over 700,000 palm trees and numerous kasbahs built in the surrounding area. The valley is famous for cultivating damascene roses used in cosmetic products like valuable rosewater. Every year in May, the Rose Festival takes place in this valley. Finally, we will reach Dades Gorges, where the first day of our trip concludes. You will spend the night in a Riad in Dades valley.
Day 2: Dades – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Desert – Camel Ride and Camp
After having breakfast at your hotel or Riad, we will continue our journey to the southeast towards the Sahara Desert of Erg Chebbi. Along the way, we will stop at the impressive Todra Gorge (Canyon), where you can enjoy breathtaking views and even spot mountain climbers and locals who come to enjoy the cooler weather compared to other parts of the south.
Driving through the palm oasis of Tinjdad, we will have the opportunity to stop for lunch. Then, we will proceed towards the desert, passing through the administrative center of Erfoud. Upon arrival at the desert, you will receive a warm welcome with mint tea from the hotel or Riad staff. Then, it’s time for an exciting camel ride through the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. You can admire the stunning views of the sunset and even try sandboarding if you wish. Finally, we will return to our luxurious desert camp, where you will have a delicious dinner in our tented restaurant or under the starry sky.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Ouarzazate
Today will be a day of exploration in the desert with less time spent on driving. We will begin by discovering the unique irrigation system called “Khettaras.” This system uses a series of wells connected by an underground channel to bring water from faraway places. Then, we will drive through the village of Merzouga and reach the Khamlia Village. This village is home to a tribe that was once brought as slaves from Sub-Saharan lands. They are known for their musical performances called Gnawa Music, which they share with visitors as a way to earn a living.
We will take a comprehensive tour of the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, with plenty of breaks for taking pictures. You will also have the opportunity to visit a local nomad family and learn about their unique way of life while enjoying a cup of mint tea together. After lunch, we will drive back to your hotel or Riad located near the sand dunes. This will be a chance for you to relax and unwind, preparing yourself for the adventures of the next day.
Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Ifrane – Fez
After enjoying breakfast at your hotel or Riad, we will start our journey towards the north, heading to the spiritual city of Fes. Along the way, we will take a brief stop at the scenic Ziz valley, which is filled with numerous palm trees. We will have lunch in Midelt before continuing our drive through the cedar forest, which is protected by UNESCO. This forest is home to a group of Barbary Apes that you may have the chance to encounter and even feed.
